The island of Korcula belongs to the South Dalmatian archipelago, separated from the Peljesac peninsula by a narrow strait of Peljesac, between 900 and 3,000 meters wide. It is the sixth largest Adriatic island with a rather indented coast and the population is about 16.000. The highest peak is Klupca (568 m). The climate is mild; an average air temperature in January is 9.8 °C and in July 26.9 °C; the average annual rainfall is 1,100 mm. The island is largely covered with Mediterranean flora including extensive pine forests.
Biggest towns are Korcula, Blato and Vela Luka. Besides them there are several smaller settlements like Lumbarda, Zrnovo, Pupnat, Cara and Smokvica. During the history main source of income was agriculture and most of settlements have developed around small plains. In the mid of 20th century industrialization of island has begun and as Korcula was also well known of small shipbuilding. 3 small shipyard were built at Korcula town, Blato and Vela Luka. Last several decades island economy has turned to tourism. Many hotels were built as well as private accommodation and besides main town it started the development of small settlements around them. Now Korcula is famous about clan blue sea, isolated and popular beaches, historical town of Korcula, Mediterranean heritage, great and healthy food and many other thing which you will enjoy while visiting.
